Move F‑Curves to Action — Overview

Move F‑Curves to Action relocates the selected F‑Curves from the active object into a different Action while preserving every keyframe, handle, interpolation, modifier, and group. Use it to tidy animation data, share animations across objects, and prepare clips for the NLA Editor. It’s a “move” operation — the original F‑Curves will be removed from the source Action.

When to use it

  • Re‑organize cluttered animation data into clearly named Actions.
  • Share a single Action across multiple objects (e.g., synchronized walk cycles).
  • Break out specific F‑Curves into their own Actions for NLA layering and blending.

How it works (short)

Pick a destination Action (existing or New Action). The operator moves selected curves by creating matching curves in the destination and copying keyframes, handles, interpolation, modifiers, groups and colors. In Blender 4.4+ the operator uses Action Slots and Channel Bags, keeping the curves appropriately linked to the correct object/slot; in older versions it uses the legacy Action API.

Destination Action

Destination Action is an Action picker. Choose any existing Action or select New Action. On Blender 4.4+ the operator will automatically create or reuse a matching Action Slot, ensuring the curves are linked correctly to the object’s slot.

New Action Name

This field appears when you choose New Action. Enter a descriptive name, e.g. Walk_Cycle or SparkleFX. The operator creates the Action (plus a slot in 4.4+), then moves the selected F‑Curves into it.

Examples

Example — Move bone channels to a new clip

  • Enter Pose Mode and select the bone’s channels or keyframes in the Graph Editor.
  • Run “Move F‑Curves to Action”, choose New Action, and enter a name like Walk_Cycle.
  • Confirm — the curves are created in the new Action and removed from the source.

Example — Move object animation to a shared action

  • Select the object that has the animation and one or more objects to share the Action.
  • Enable the operator’s Shared Action option and pick the destination Action.
  • The operator shares the Action and creates or reuses the object slot so each object’s channelbag contains the correct curves.

Version Notes (Blender 4.4 / 5.x)

Blender 4.4+ introduced layered Actions with Action Slots and Channel Bags; Blender 5.x continues this design. For Blender 4.4+ the operator uses Channel Bags (and ensures the correct slot is used) so curves remain associated properly with the target object. For older Blender versions the operator falls back to the legacy action.fcurves API.

Troubleshooting & Common Gotchas

  • Move vs Copy: Move removes the original curves. If you want duplicates, use Copy rather than Move.
  • Slot mismatch (5.x): If you create target curves manually without the correct slot, the plugin may create them in a different channelbag. Use the operator to create destination curves instead of pre-making blank curves.
  • Bone name mismatch: Bone names have to match when moving from one action to another. If you need to remap a dimension or direction, you can also use the bone remap operator (Copy Bone Animation to Selected).
  • Array index mismatch: X/Y/Z array index differences may look wrong. Use remap settings when copying rotation/quaternion channels.
  • Clipboard copy is curve-centric: The Graph Editor clipboard operates per active F‑Curve and is not a multi-curve bulk export — use Move or Copy to Selected for multi-curve operations.

Debugging & Logging

Enable the add-on’s debug mode in Preferences to capture internal logs. Useful debug indicators include:

  • Which action slot/channelbag was used for new curves.
  • Whether the operator fell back to the legacy API (no slots) or used fcurve_ensure_for_datablock on Blender 5.x.
  • Success/failure of curve creation and original curve removal.

Quick Checklist (if results look wrong)

  • Did you mean to use Move (permanently removes the original curves) or Copy?
  • Is the target action / slot correctly assigned? (Check Action Editor’s Slots in Blender 4.4+.)
  • Did you remap bone names correctly when copying between different armatures/bone names?
  • If you used the Graph Editor clipboard, did you use the operator that supports multi-curve copy/paste?
  • Enable debug mode and share logs if the behavior still looks incorrect.

Which operator should I use?

  • Move F‑Curves to Action — permanently relocate selected curves to a specific Action/slot.
  • Copy Animation to Selected — copy animation from an active object/bone to selected objects/bones with remap options and keep the originals intact.
  • Copy (Graph Editor clipboard) — single-FCurve copy/paste of ease, timing, or value (useful for pasting the same key timing/ease across multiple curves).
